HBO Sets Airdate For Special ‘Euphoria’ Episode

HBO Sets Airdate For Special ‘Euphoria’ Episode

HBO said Monday that Euphoria will return for not one but two special episodes that are intended to bridge the gap between its successful Season 1 and Season 2, the latter of which has been delayed because of the coronavirus shutdown.

The network said the first of the two planned episodes of the series, for which star Zendaya won the Lead Actress in a Drama Series Emmy last month, will air Sunday, December 6 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The second episode does not yet have an airdate.

The first bonus episode, titled “Trouble Don’t Last Always,” follows Rue (Zendaya) as she celebrates Christmas. It was written and directed by series creator Sam Levinson and also stars Colman Domingo, who appeared in Season 1. Both episodes were produced under COVID-19 guidelines.

Zendaya said on her social media accounts today that she and co-star Hunter Schafer are set to appear in both episodes. “We really missed them. Two special Euphoria episodes coming soon. First one December 6th on @hbo,” the actress said on Instagram. The accompanying photo was of Zendaya’s Rue reflected in Schafer’s eye. In the cryptic shot, Zendaya tagged Schafer, Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and DP Marcell Rev.

The August 2019 season finale concluded with Rue, a recovering addict, falling back into her old habits after she leaves Jules behind on a train to a big city.

Euphoria won three total Emmys last month for its freshman run, also taking home prizes for Outstanding Contemporary Makeup and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for Laberinth.

Zendaya had teased a single bridge episode during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in August, which HBO boss Casey Bloys confirmed on Emmy night would be a “special COVID episode.”

“We might end up doing a little bridge episode,” Zendaya told Kimmel at the time. “I don’t really know how to describe it, but an episode that we can do with a limited amount of people in a safer environment… so we have something to live on until we are able to go into Season 2.”

Hunter Schafer creates art inspired by Miranda July’s new film, ‘Kajillionaire’

Hunter Schafer was invited by Miranda July to create a beautiful piece of art inspired by her new film ‘Kajillionaire’. You can check out Hunter’s art in our gallery and you can also read more about it and the poem that inspired it below!

Cross-disciplinary artist Miranda July’s latest film, Kajillionaire, is an atypical family film in all senses of the word. The Focus Feature flick follows con artists Theresa (Debra Winger) and Robert (Richard Jenkins), along with their only daughter Old Dolio (Evan Rachel Wood), across a series of heists—scavenging, swindling, scamming and stealing at every turn. In a hastily conceived heist, they meet a stranger (Gina Rodriguez), who soon thereafter joins the family in this offbeat and heart-warming tale.

In honor of the film’s release and the thematic elements present in Kajillionaire, Miranda July has partnered with several LGBTQ+ creators to create visual pieces to complement the film. Flaunt has the privilege to debut pieces from Los Angeles Youth Poet Laureate Rhiannon McGavin, who created a poem inspired by the film, paired with an original visual art response by Hunter Schafer (Euphoria). The poem is titled ‘Top Note,’ and paints a picture of a world beyond categories like gender or sex, where everyone is free to love and be. See Kajillionaire in select cinemas now.

Top Note

There’s a tree rooted to this yellow evening bus

for all that it smells of pear blossoms, the crushed

white flowers spread on the workday air

but now I see you by a window with your dark hair

twisted up, leaving the back of your neck

smooth above your collar and surely there, you spritzed

the perfume before going out, the sweet fog tendriled

back to me, swaying on the silver pole, my mouth a touch open

a touch open as it was when I walked with the other little girl

unsupervised to the old orchard for green pears like birthday money

and uncut jade, green pears so full you had to commit

to each bite, a promise, picked from the sun side of a tree

which caught the most sugar, fruit warm

as the July bursting around it and then another,

of course, how she would pick each pear with a twist, delicate

as how she dropped a white mouse in the aquarium of her garden snake

before we came here to these forgotten trees, grown past

their corset grid, the roots tangled and hidden as this day, pulp-drunk,

juice over our faces like a second skin and still the tang

of pears in your mouth like a gulp of wine stolen from the dinner table

and the blooms thick on the breeze around us and you’re

stepping off the bus now, and I’ll never know if your name bends

the sunlight, honey, we’ll never touch

but over your pulse you take with you this sweetness.

Hunter Schafer was photographed for W’s 2020 TV Portfolio, where she paid homage to one of her favorite animes Neon Genesis Evangelion. During the interview, she talked about being creative during quarantine, Euphoria, her favorite TV shows and much more. Hunter Schafer might have experienced one of the most productive quarantines you’ll hear about. In the beginning, she spent nearly two months locked in her apartment in Los Angeles writing, painting, and creating storyboards nonstop. We’re talking day and night. Then she purchased a truck and drove it from California to North Carolina, where her sister lives. It’s also possible that, somewhere in there, she worked on Euphoria, the HBO show in which she plays Jules, the charming best friend and love interest of Zendaya, whose character is named Rue. Euphoria can be described as nothing short of a sensation: When it debuted, in June 2019, HBO’s audience numbers increased by 130 percent within four days of the premiere of the first episode due to replays and streaming. Although Zendaya-as-Rue was certainly central to the show’s appeal, Schafer’s Jules emerged as an equally intriguing person in creator Sam Levinson’s universe: a transgender teenage girl searching for friendship and recognition while engaging in a series of trysts with older men.

But if Schafer did any work on Euphoria in the past six months, the world won’t find out just yet—the start date for production on season 2 is still unknown, and when the 21-year-old actress calls from a hotel in L.A. (she’s allowing a friend who doesn’t have air conditioning to stay in her home during a particularly inhumane heat wave), she won’t spill any information.

Instead, she shares the details of her artistic process: how she played the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion in the background on her projector with the sound off while she painted; her father’s obsession with comic books, which led to her own interest in Hawkwoman and the Green Lantern. Mostly, quarantine was a time of exploration for Schafer—whether physically, when driving in a car, or artistically, while sliding a fat marker across a piece of paper. “I don’t know if my style of drawing or artwork would be considered anime,” she said. “I don’t really know what to call it. It’s kind of become its own thing.”

Hunter Schafer Named Shiseido Makeup Global Brand Ambassador

Hunter Schafer Named Shiseido Makeup Global Brand Ambassador

Hunter Schafer has a new home with Shiseido.

The actress and artist, best known for playing transgender teen Jules on HBO’s Euphoria, has landed with the Japanese beauty brand as its newest global brand ambassador. She’ll make her first campaign appearance in 2021. Terms of the appointment were not disclosed.

It’s the latest addition to Schafer’s multi-faceted career. She built her resume first by landing a job as a contributing artist for Rookie magazine at the age of 15. She then attended the University of North Carolina School of the Arts where she was named a finalist in the National Young Arts Foundation competition. That same year, 2017, she earned a spot on Teen Vogue’s 21 Under 21 list.

Schafer then segued to fashion, walking on runways for Dior, Rick Owens, Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu, Coach, Helmut Lang, R13 and Mansur Gavriel, among others. Now, she’s known for turning heads opposite Zendaya on Euphoria. As for her partnership with the brand, Shiseido global artistic director James Boehmer says, “She really represents the current zeitgeist of beauty in that there are no rules, no boundaries, and no restrictions. Similar to Shiseido, Hunter is both modern and timeless. She continues to write her own narrative, which is what we encourage people to do with makeup.”

In a release announcing the news, Schafer says that she was interested in Shiseido because of the brand’s artistry and for how it aligns with her own creative expression. “As someone who likes to be artistic with makeup, that was something that instantly attracted me to the brand. Shiseido is about more than trying to look pretty or appeal to a specific standard of beauty. Shiseido is parallel to art,” she explains. “By partnering with Shiseido, I want to bring more visibility to the notion that you can move beyond one beauty ideal or standard. I’m about leveling up and finding your own frequency in makeup.”

Hunter Schafer recently saw something magnificent.

But first: She bought a truck.

At the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, Schafer found herself alone in Los Angeles. As one of the lucky Americans who could afford the pause in work, she spent those initial weeks in excited, nocturnal bursts of creative writing. (She took Shonda Rhimes’s TV-writing course on Masterclass.) “But I couldn’t handle the severe sense of isolation — being alone in the apartment and having no mode of transportation,” she says. (“Outside of a skateboard,” she adds, like a cool teen.)

So she bought the truck, and then drove across the nation to her sister’s house in North Carolina. “It was probably the most stable I felt throughout all of quarantine,” Schafer says. “I just had one objective, which [was] stay on the road and follow the map and drive. And it was great.”

She drove through Arizona to see the preschool she attended. She stopped in Memphis to visit the Lorraine Motel, the place where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated that has since been converted into the National Civil Rights Museum. But she was in Texas when, on a road that stretched through open country dotted with windmills, she saw it: a very big, bad cloud. It was a fluffy tempest, as vast as a city, crawling across a sea of grass. It was a cumulonimbus cloud. Schafer is sure of it; a cloud cooked by the hot Texas wind into something magnificent, terrifying, and massive, and capable of sneezing out a devastating tornado at random. This is all an extended metaphor to say that Schafer knows what it is like to drive right into the eye of a storm.
